Harry Gebhard graduated

Dr. Harry Gebhard graduated from his AOSpine North America Fellowship Program with the distinguished Basic Science Research Award 2010, having worked with bioengineered intervertebral discs (IVD). The committee recognized his contributions to a translational and collaborative research project between Dr. Härtl's team at New York-Presbyterian Hospital/Weill Cornell Medical College and Dr. Bonassar's team of biomedical engineers in the Departments of Biomedical Engineering and Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering at Cornell University in Ithaca. Back pain is one of the leading causes for suffering and health care costs in the United States. Bioengineered treatment modalities could replace the current surgical treatment of discectomy, spinal instrumentation, and fusion. And for the 20 million people with discogenic back pain, a composite tissue-engineered IVD may provide superior relief from degenerative disc disease. Dr. Gebhard's scientific and surgical expertise lead in the accomplishment of a model that resulted in significant understanding and further development of bioengineered intervertebral discs. Basic and clinical research within AOSpine aims to exploit the synergies between science and surgery in the creation of unique knowledge. The AOSpine Research Commission (AOSRC) oversees the worldwide AOSpine Research Network (AOSRN), an affiliation of institutes that conduct collaborative projects in the USA, Europe, and Asia Pacific towards a common goal: understanding the pathogenesis of disc degeneration and its potential treatment.
