Patterson Professorship Launches December 5, 2008
The Department is pleased to announce the launch of the Russel and Julie Patterson Endowed Professorship in Neurological Surgery. Dr. Patterson's distinguished career at NewYork-Cornell spanned four decades. A recipient of The Cushing Award, named for Dr. Harvey Cushing "the father of modern neurosurgery," Dr. Patterson served as Surgeon-in-Charge of Neurosurgery from 1971 to 1995. He has been widely published in the scholarly journals in the areas of both brain and heart surgery. One aspect of his research involved the use of profound hypothermia with cardiac arrest for the management of intracranial surgical disorders, which ultimately led to the development of a filter to remove microemboli from the heart-lung during cardiopulmonary bypass. This advancement directly improved survival outcomes for patients undergoing cardiac surgery and saw wide usage. (JAMA, January 4, 1971) During his tenure, some 40 residents completed residency training in neurosurgery.
On December 5, 2008, the Department will hold an event to launch the Russel and Julie Patterson Endowed Professorship in Neurological Surgery. The educational portion of the day (12:30 pm to 5:30pm) will be held at Rockefeller Research Laboratories Auditorium, including talks given by experts in their fields on the latest in neurological surgery, research, and brain health. This will be followed by a cocktail party and dinner at the St. Regis Hotel to begin at 6:30pm.
Invitation with more details coming soon.
